Paranoid Android

We are all aware that AI (artificial intelligence) is already having an enormous impact on our lives and will continue to do so. Due to its ability to generate material and even experiences at rapid or immediate speeds, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic in the creative/digital industries where many of us work. With this new technology, many people are starting to wonder if these robots could eventually replace us.

In my opinion, I feel that so long as humans need to design, there will be a need for human designers in order to design for them. In fact, AI offers designers and creators a whole new world of possibilities in crafting and creating better and more inclusive experiences for our users.

The question then becomes, what are some of the things that we can do to improve our role as designers, and to improve the experience of our users from a technology perspective, that we can use AI to solve?

Here are a few ways that designers can use AI in our work.

  • Accessibility – Making our designs and projects more inclusive to a diverse spectrum of people should remain a top priority. AI can help us in this by automatically detecting and, in some cases, resolving those issues. Some of these issues can include font and text sizes, color contrast, color visibility, and spacing.
  • Personalization - We are constantly striving to ensure that our designs meet the needs of our target audience. AI can help by generating algorithms that assess our users' actions and behaviors, allowing us to provide the personalized experiences that our customers are expecting.
  • Prototyping – Testing our designs with our users through prototyping can be a lengthy and time-consuming process. Artificial intelligence can help designers create faster prototypes by generating variations of designs automatically this ability to quickly test and iterate on different designs, leads to faster and more effective final products.
  • Brainstorming – Although real people will always have the best ideas, artificial intelligence (AI) can help start generating those ideas in order to help get those thoughts moving. AI can analyze data and existing designs to find trends and patterns that human designers might not have noticed. Once designers have gathered this data, we can use it to inspire innovation and fresh concepts.

The future of UX design and AI is promising. As creatives, designers, and developers, we have a tremendous chance to employ AI tools and technologies to improve the user experience. It will also be our responsibility to ensure that we employ ethics, genuine human behavior, and knowledge to choose where AI takes us.
